Attributes of God
God is the holy and great I AM. He is the wonderful and glorious Almighty God, Lord of Lord and King of Kings. God is just, righteous, good, and loving. And so much more. And, all that God is, he is perfectly and forever. For example, God is completely just, always just, and perfectly just. He has always been just and always will be. I can trust that God will act justly with me. The same can be said of all of God’s other attributes. God is completely righteous, always righteous, and perfectly righteous. He has always been righteous, and always will be. I can trust that God will be righteous in all he does with me. And so on. The vastness of God’s greatness and perfection are beyond my grasp to comprehend. But I have come to realize that the more I know God, the more I trust him and rest in his care.
As I read God’s Word, I make note of God’s attributes, who he is and what he does. My list has become quite long, with hundreds of words. I delight in finding new words as I read scripture, as I find joy in knowing and understanding more and more of who God is.
When I come before God, I can only do so humbly. My Father God, the Creator and Ruler of the universe, invites me into his presence and honors me with the privilege of prayer. Anytime, anywhere. Wow. Words are inadequate to express my gratitude for this precious gift.
Below is a list of some of the attributes of God. I wanted to keep it short, maybe a dozen or so words, but I keep thinking of more and more that I “have to” add. I hope you enjoy the ones that I have chosen. Truly, we serve an awesome God.
God Alone is God
Isaiah 37:16
O Lord of hosts, God of Israel, enthroned above the cherubim, you are the God, you alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth; you have made heaven and earth.
God is the Almighty
Revelation 1:8
“I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
God is Awesome
Exodus 15:11
Who is like you, O Lord, among the gods? Who is like you, majestic in holiness, awesome in glorious deeds, doing wonders?
God is Beautiful
Psalm 27:4
One thing have I asked of the Lord, that will I seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to inquire in his temple.
God is the Breath I Breathe
Job 33:4
The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life.
God Calls Me by Name
Isaiah 43:1-3
Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.
God Chose Me
Ephesian 1 :3-5
3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places, 4 even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.
God Cleanses Me
1 John 1:9
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
God is a God of Comfort
1 Corinthians 1:3-4
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.
God is a Consuming Fire
Deuteronomy 4:24
For the Lord your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God.
God is the Creator
Genesis 1:1
In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
God Delights in Me
Psalm 147:11 (NIV)
the Lord delights in those who fear him,
who put their hope in his unfailing love.
God is My Desire
Isaiah 26:8-9
Indeed, while following the way of Your judgments, O Lord, we have waited for You eagerly; Your name, even Your memory, is the desire of our souls. At night my soul longs for You, indeed, my spirit within me seeks You diligently; For when the earth experiences Your judgments The inhabitants of the world learn righteousness.
God Does New Things
Isaiah 43:16-19
Thus says the Lord, who makes a way in the sea, a path in the mighty waters, who brings forth chariot and horse, army and warrior; they lie down, they cannot rise, they are extinguished, quenched like a wick: “Remember not the former things, nor consider the things of old. Behold, I am doing a new thing; now it springs forth, do you not perceive it? I will make a way in the wilderness and rivers in the desert.
God is My Dwelling Place
Psalm 90:1-2
Lord, you have been our dwelling place[a] in all generations. 2 Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever you had formed the earth and the world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.
God Encourages Me
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
God is Eternal
Deuteronomy 33:27
The eternal God is your dwelling place, and underneath are the everlasting arms.
God is Faithful
Deuteronomy 7:9
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love him and keep his commandments, to a thousand generations.
God Forgives My Sins
Psalm 103:1-5
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and all that is within me,
bless his holy name!
Bless the Lord, O my soul,
and forget not all his benefits,

who heals all your diseases,
who redeems your life from the pit,

God is Glorious
1 Chronicles 16:29-34

God is Good

God is Head Over All

God Heals the Brokenhearted
Psalm 147:3
He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds.
God is Holy
Isaiah 6:3
And one called to another and said: “Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts; the whole earth is full of his glory!”
God is Immutable
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
God in Infinite
Psalm 147:5
Great is our Lord, and abundant in power; his understanding is beyond measure.
God is Just
Deuteronomy 32:4
The Rock! His work is perfect,

God is Kind

God Loves

God is Perfect in All His Ways

This God—his way is perfect; the word of the Lord proves true; he is a shield for all those who take refuge in him.
God Rejoices Over Me
Zephaniah 3:17
The Lord your God is in your midst,
a mighty one who will save;
he will rejoice over you with gladness;
he will quiet you by his love;
he will exult over you with loud singing
God is Righteous
Psalm 11:7
For the Lord is righteous; he loves righteous deeds; the upright shall behold his face.
God is My Rock
Psalm 18:2
The LORD is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer, my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
God is Sovereign
1 Chronicles 29:11-12

God Understands Me
Psalm 139:1-6

God Waits
Isaiah 30: 18
Therefore the Lord waits to be gracious to you, and therefore he exalts himself to show mercy to you. For the Lord is a God of justice; blessed are all those who wait for him.
God is With Me in My Trials
Isaiah 43:1-3
