Scripture I Turn to When I am Hurting
God calms my soul with his Word.
There are Bible verses that come to mind when I am hurting. They remind me of truths about God that not only bring me comfort but also calm my soul. I incorporate these verses into the prayers that I bring before God.
A. God’s mercies are new every morning.
Lamentations 3:21-23
But this I call to mind,
and therefore I have hope:
The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases;
his mercies never come to an end;
they are new every morning;
great is your faithfulness.


B. God is near.
Psalm 34:18
The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.
C. God is with us in our trials.
Isaiah 43:1-3
But now thus says the Lord,
he who created you, O Jacob,
he who formed you, O Israel:
“Fear not, for I have redeemed you;
I have called you by name, you are mine.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you;
when you walk through fire you shall not be burned,
and the flame shall not consume you.
For I am the Lord your God,
the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.


D. God tells me I need not fear for he is with me.
Isaiah 41:10
Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God;
I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
E. God doesn’t change.
Hebrews 13:8
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.


F. God will not allow anything to separate me from his love.
Romans 8:38-39
For I am sure that neither death nor life, nor angels nor rulers, nor things present nor things to come, nor powers, nor height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord.
G. God will keep me safe.
Proverbs 18:10
The name of the Lord is a strong tower;
the righteous man runs into it and is safe.


H. God is my strength.
Psalm 18:1-3
I love you, O Lord, my strength.
The Lord is my rock and my fortress and my deliverer,
my God, my rock, in whom I take refuge,
my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my stronghold.
I call upon the Lord, who is worthy to be praised,
and I am saved from my enemies.
I. God welcomes me to his throne of grace.
Hebrews 4:16
Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.


J. God’s love is wide and long and high and deep.
Ephesians 3:16-19 (NIV)
I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being, so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge—that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.
K. God is able to answer my prayers in amazing and wonderful ways.
Ephesians 3:20-21 (NIV)
Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.


L. God will not allow pain and suffering to have the final word!
Revelation 21:3-4
And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Behold, the dwelling place of God is with man. He will dwell with them, and they will be his people, and God himself will be with them as their God. He will wipe away every tear from their eyes, and death shall be no more, neither shall there be mourning, nor crying, nor pain anymore, for the former things have passed away.”
Prayer
Dear Father God,
Thank you for welcoming us to come before your throne of grace to present our requests to receive your mercy.
We believe your Word to be true. We believe that one day you will calm our soul forever. You will wipe every tear from our eyes.
We will see you face to face. We will see your glory and be with you forever, and there will be no more death, and no more mourning, and no more crying, and no more pain. We will be with you forever.
Father, We long for that day. We long to see you and your glory. We long to see Jesus. Make that day come soon, Father. Please, make it soon.
Father God, we experience your joy now. We delight in your presence, yet we know this is just a shadow of heaven. Thank you for the sure and certain hope that you give us of eternity with you.
We love you Father with all of our hearts and souls and minds and strength. Help us to know, love, and serve you more and more each day.
And it’s in the precious name of your Son, Jesus, that I pray.
