Why My Soul Yearns for God

Why My Soul Yearns for God

(I wrote this blog in January 2022 but didn’t post it then.)

You have said, “Seek my face.”

My heart says to you, “Your face, Lord, do I seek.”

Psalm 27:8

My Soul Yearns Because I Love Him

I love God with all that I am. I love him with all my being and all that I am. My soul yearns and longs for God.

I love God for Who He Is and What He Does

I love the Lord, my God. He is amazing. He is the great I AM. He is my rock, my shelter, my strong tower, my dwelling place, my hiding place. He is my helper, my comforter, my defender. I can count on him to be all those things for me, but he is so much more.

God is awesome and majestic, glorious, and beautiful, merciful and gracious. He is eternal and never changing, sovereign and omnipotent, perfectly loving and all good. God is the Creator and Ruler of the Universe, the Lord of Lord and King of Kings. He is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

God loves me personally and intimately. He is always with me, dwells within me, and will never leave me. And he delights in me. So, I seek the Lord, my God. He is my all in all, my everything.

God is Jesus, my Savior, who suffered and died for me.

God is my Father God, adopting me as his child.

God pours his blessing all over me and surrounds me with his love. He heals and mends the broken parts of me and teaches me his way with his Word.

God is so very, very good to me. And my response is love. I love my God with all my being and with all that I am able. I love him all my heart and soul and strength and mind. I seek with all I am able to know him more, love him more, serve him more.

My heart seeks him. My soul yearns for him. I draw near to my God.

Isaiah 26:9

My soul yearns for you in the night;

my spirit within me earnestly seeks you.

Psalm 42:1-2

As a deer pants for flowing streams,

so pants my soul for you, O God.

2 My soul thirsts for God, for the living God.

When shall I come and appear before God?

Those Who Seek God Will Find Him

I seek God and he rewards me with his presence. He draws near me when I draw near to him. He rewards me with joy even when my circumstances are difficult. He comforts me. He calms me. He heals me. He is my shelter, my strong tower, my hiding place.  He reminds me of all I have in him. He gives me a glimpse of eternity. I find my hope in God. I find my rest and peace in God. I find my belonging.

Jeremiah 29:13

You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

James 4:8

Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you.

Psalm 145:18

The Lord is near to all who call on him, to all who call on him in truth.

I will Delight and Rejoice in My God

I will seek my God and find him. I will rejoice and be glad. God has turned my heart from a heart of stone into a heart of flesh so that I now desire him. I delight in him. I delight in God, and he gives me the desires of my heart. And the desire of my heart is now him. It gets even better than that. God initiates this whole process. God’s Spirit, who dwells within me, also moves within me to seek God. So, I seek God, find God, delight in God, desire God, and seek him more. God is so good.

Psalm 40:16

But may all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you;

may those who love your salvation say continually, “Great is the Lord!”

Ezekiel 36:26

And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh.

Psalm 37:4

Delight yourself in the Lord,

and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Finding My Satisfaction in God

John Piper is known to say, “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in him.” (See, for example, his website Desiring God at www.desiringGod.org.) I find my true satisfaction in God. Sometimes, though, I am distracted by so many other things in life. I allow other things, some important and others very much not so, to distract me from keeping God first and seeking him. We live in this world, and there are people to love and things that we need to care for. I know when I have things out of balance. I know when I’m not seeking him. I need God. I need God every day, every hour, every minute. My life is about knowing, loving, and serving God the result of which is finding of satisfaction in him. God is so very good to me.

Dear Father God,
